2024 Anaheim 1 Supercross Recap

The gate dropped for the 2024 Monster Energy Supercross season on Saturday in Anaheim at Angel Stadium. The much anticipated return of Eli Tomac, who lost the 2023 title after rupturing his Achilles in the penultimate race which he was winning and at the time pretty much held an insurmountable points lead unless something bad happened like rupturing an Achilles, was ruptured by Jett Lawrence powered by an extravagant Honda dirt bike. He won, possibly setting the stage for another ho-hum year in dirt bike racing. Recall he won every 450 Outdoor race last season in a depleted field. This year not so much and he still pulled off the Holeshot and led every lap. He also sort of became the first rider in history to win his first 450 Supercross start. Weird, considering all the hype around the SuperMotocross series and the powers-that-be trying to inject some steroids into that show, SMX apparently doesn't count. Recall Lawrence won several SMX races several months ago.

RJ Hampshire took the checkers for the 250 West class. Oh, everybody's favorite knucklehead Vince Friese took out a bunch of riders (debatable) going for the Holeshot in a qualifying Heat race, including Hunter Lawrence, who then failed to get out of the LCQ (Last Chance Qualifier for the uninitiated) by less than half a second ruining any chance he might get to battle his brother for the 450 class title. Unless, of course, Friese takes out Jett in the coming weeks. Stay tuned...
